Kitchen Director & Star Chef with Passion
Michael Kempf completed his training as a chef at the Romantik Hotel Kleber Post in Bad Saulgau, and a talent emerged. There he spent a year as a tournant, entremetier and saucier. In the 2-star restaurant, Kempf learned the art of perfecting fish dishes. At the Fischerzunft restaurant in Schaffhausen, he rose to garde manager, entremetier and saucier. In 2001 he went to Bergisch Gladbach as a saucier and entremetier to the 3-star chef Dieter Müller in the Schlosshotel Lerbach. In 2003, The Mandala Hotel won this culinary master.
The greatest achievement for Kempf to date was being awarded his 1st Michelin star at the age of 26, followed by the award "Climber of the Year" from Gault-Millau in 2008 and finally the 2nd Michelin star in 2013.
Michael Kempf
Rooms Division Manager
He successfully completed his training as a hotel specialist at THE MANDALA HOTEL in 2007 and has been working with us at the 5 star hotel since then, with a short break.
This is where he practically “grew up”. In 2016 Dima, as we all call him, joined THE MANDALA HOTEL as Assistant Front Office Manager and in February 2018 he was promoted to Front Office Manager and then in February 2020 to Rooms Division Manager. An outstanding career and an exceptional example when you consider that Dima came to Berlin from the Ukraine in 2007 without any knowledge of German.
He has the most fun developing new ideas together with his team and of course in direct contact with the guests at THE MANDALA, especially when he sees how enthusiastic they are.

Our Chefs and Managing Partners
It all started in 1999 when Lutz Hesse and Christian Andresen launched THE MANDALA HOTEL with 158 rooms under the name "Madison". It quickly became a popular meeting place for visitors to Berlin to explore the new mini-city at Potsdamer Platz.
The owners take pride in keeping their THE MANDALA HOTEL and THE MANDALA SUITES in good condition at all times and take their time with changes. THE MANDALA HOTEL was in the right place at the right time, but it is thanks to the efforts of Lutz Hesse and Christian Andresen that it has endured to this day. Passion, discipline and perseverance. "That's what we exemplify," says Lutz Hesse with a smile.
